Remember The Milk - A Must Have Addition To Your Google Account
By Dave Shaw
Remember the Milk (RTM) is something I came across just a few weeks ago. I discovered it whilst searching for add-ons to Gmail. What is it? I doubt I can put it better than the makers themselves…
“Managing tasks is generally not a fun way to spend your time. We created Remember The Milk so that you no longer have to write your to-do lists on sticky notes, whiteboards, random scraps of paper, or the back of your hand. Remember The Milk makes managing tasks an enjoyable experience.”
Sounds great. So how does it work? First you need to create an account over at Remember The Milk. Next you need to decide how you d like to use RTM. In fact you can change your mind later and add new services whenever you like.
What are the options?
Gmail
My favourite - Gmail. After a quick install of a Firefox add-on you re ready to begin. Just enter a new task in the text field and press enter and you ll see your task show up in the pane. The great thing is, you only need to enter Anything-you-like, 5pm, tomorrow and RTM will automatically assign the time and date to your task. Once entered you can assign tags to your task/reminder which you can later use to filter your tasks. I ve just started using the tags @work and @home which is very useful for getting the most relevant tasks for wherever I am at the time.
If you enter a Gmail contact in the task text bar, RTM will connect your task with that contact. And if you task is related to an email, select the email and you see under the More actions drop down that you can select Add task which will connect the email and the task. You can even set Gmail to add a task for a particular email whenever you star an email. Just go to Gmail s settings and turn it on. When you re ready to complete the task you ll see a link to the email in your task overview. Click it, reply and you re done!
Google Calender
If you use Google Calender then RTM will be extremely clever and see if it can work out when your task is due from your calender events. For instance, if you d entered Mum s birthday in your calender for a particular day and then came to start a task with the phrase Buy flowers for Mum s birthday , RTM will automatically find the date from your calendar and enter it in. If you separately add RTM to your Google Calender, your tasks will show up on the relevant days.
And the rest…
RTM is also available for your mobile, iGoogle, Twitter, iPhone, iTouch, pocket PC and offline with Google Gears.
Try it out.
